A new state-of-the-art crime lab has been provided to Stewart International Airport. The Port Authority teamed up with the New York State Police to build the $10 million lab, which will provide critical testing services to local law enforcement.
The new lab is intended to help state police analyze evidence and study samples in DWI and drug cases taking place in the town of Albany as well as throughout Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Ulster, and Rockland counties. It features a full range of crime lab services including forensic toxicologists, computer databases, and investigation specialists who assist with criminal evidence evaluation. The new lab is expected to work with Albany’s main lab to handle approximately 450 toxicology cases, 1,250 drug cases, and 3,500 submissions of evidence on a yearly basis.
Governor Andrew Cuomo called the new lab “one more step towards a safer and more secure New York.” Local law enforcement depends on the state police lab resources and using state police couriers to transport evidence from a regional lab to Albany frees up local police resources while still preserving the evidence.
